90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga

Puketi Kauri Forest
Early in the morning about 7am we left Paihia and headed to the far north. The first stop was Puketi Kauri Forest.

The TOP Bakery in New Zealand
It might be true. Probably there are not many (if any :) other bakeries above that one on the map.

90 Mile Beach
90 Mile Beach is an official motorway with a 100km/h speed limit.
It's actually only 64 miles long.
Message from Doug Klever:
"Your right 90 Mile Beach is a road. Portions of the beach have 100k speed limit. However, when in the vicinity of people, children, birds, sea life and endangered species speed is required to be significantly reduced. I appreciate your blog, but I and several thousand live here and use the beach everyday and are sick of the vehicles on the beach, especially in the residential beach areas. We cannot use the beach safely anymore for fear of being run over. The speed limit in a residential zone of the beach has been changed to 30k. I think your 100k statement sends out the wrong message. You have to drive to the conditions. Furthermore any one who drives at 100k on the beach is an idiot with a death wish."

90 Mile Beach
The only motorway in New Zealand without any road markings. You can drive on any side of the beach you like.

Awesome Adventures bus
Our Awesome Adventures bus. And I have to say the adventure was really awesome!

Car wreck - tourist attraction
That was a two weeks fresh car wreck. Such accidents are not rare on 90 Mile Beach.
The day when the car sank was rainy. Streams of water were running through the beach to the ocean. The car got caught in one of those streams. Sand + water = quick sand.

Climbing the giant sand dunes
Sun, heat, loose sand and a long steep slope make the climb a challenge.

View from the summit of a sand dune
We turned off the 90 Mile Beach and took the riverbed to get to the dunes.
