Amerigo Vespucci Italian sailing ship in Auckland
Italian ship Amerigo Vespucci sailed into Auckland on Sunday for a five month stay, during which its crew will take in the America's Cup yacht racing. The three-masted navy training ship, named for the 15th century Italian explorer who gave his name to America, began its longest voyage in May. Acclaimed as the world's most beautiful tall ship, Amerigo Vespucci was built in 1930. More than 100m long, it has a steel hull, teak deck, 2800sq metres sail area and goldplating on its bow and stern. It is crewed by 430 sailors and officer cadets. (stuff.co.nz)
